  Date of Request: July 1999

CIC Reference No. 115
Data Providers: Mitchell International, ADP Claims Solutions Group, Motor Information Services/CCC Information Systems
Original Time Allowance: 2.6 Mitchell, 2.2 Motor, 2.5 ADP
Original Labor Note:
none

Issue:
Inaccurate time: Rear crossmember requires removal to access "high pressure tubing" leading into steering valve

Response:
  • Motor/CCC –Crossmember doesn't have to be removed. Honda's service manual steering gear box removal states to disconnect the two lines from the valve body after step #9, "slide the rack all the way to the right." However the catalytic converter will have to be removed. MOTOR will add a footnote, "After Catalytic Converter is removed"
  • ADP –The Honda dealer ADP contacted confirmed the crossmember requires removal. ADP does allow the time to remove the rear cross member to gain access for the replacement of the steering gear. The replacement time for this cross member is 8.2 hours as a stand alone replacement. There are operations which are common between the gear and cross member. The old time ADP provided for the replacement of the steering gear was 2.9 hours. The additional time to remove the cross member increases the full replacement for the steering gear to 7.0 hours.
  • Mitchell–Investigated operation and concluded that steering rack removal can be easily facilitated without removing crossmember.
Results/Change:
  • ADP is the only one to make changes so far.
Mitchell December 2000 Investigated operation and concluded that steering rack removal can be easily facilitated without removing crossmember.
Motor July 16, 2001 Crossmember doesn't have to be removed. Honda's service manual steering gear box removal states to disconnect the two lines from the valve body after step #9, "slide the rack all the way to the right." However the catalytic converter will have to be removed. MOTOR will add a footnote, "After Catalytic Converter is removed"
ADP September 2000 added the necessary time to remove crossmember
May 23, 2001 ADP has provided additional information, which is printed above in red under "Responses".
