1998-2001 Ford Ranger Super Cab (4dr)
R&R Rocker Panel

Date of Inquiry:            October 8th 2001

Posted to Website:        August 6, 2003

Time allowance: Mitchell                        8.5 hrs (Super Cab four door)

7.5 hrs. (Super Cab two door)

Labor text note:            #w/Hinge pillar or Otr Corner Panel Removed Deduct 1.0

Motor/CCC                 7.5 hrs (Super Cab four door)

7.5 hrs. (Super Cab two door)

Labor text note:            # Labor: Time is to section within door opening.                                                                                   Includes R&I door, seat and carpeting.

ADP                            6.9 hrs.  (Super Cab four door)

6.5 hrs.  (Super Cab two door)

6.3 hrs.  (Standard Cab two door)

Question: Does Ford approve of sectioning of the rocker on four door models? The rear door latches to the rocker and the front door latches to the rear door. There may be safety considerations that may have not been considered.

Note: The upper portion of the rocker is sandwiched between the floor and inner rocker requiring the spot welds that attach all three panels to be “through-drilled” (over size holes in all three panels). On a full panel replacement there are 118 (12 gauge metal) spots welds that require removal with 38 of the spot welds in the floor area join where there are three layers of metal, the rocker in the middle (sandwiched between floor and inner rocker).

Issue:

¨       Motor/CCC

1.       Unrealistic time allowance for sectioning

2.       Does not offer a time allowance for a full panel replacement (required in some repair situations)

3.       Labor text note includes the R&I time allowance for one door and not two, as it should state

4.       Data base does not show the existence of the “inner rocker”

5.       Inner rocker must be moved to facilitate full rocker panel replacement

6.       Bed, fender and inner rocker must be removed on full part replacement

7.       There are many more replacement steps on a four door than a two door model

¨       Mitchell

1.       Data base does not show the existence of the “inner rocker”

2.       Inner rocker must be moved to facilitate full rocker panel replacement

3.       Bed, fender and inner rocker must be removed on full part replacement

¨       ADP

1.       Does not specify a full panel replacement or a section replacement

2.       Unrealistic time allowance

3.       Does not list the inner rocker in the data base

4.       Inner rocker must be moved to facilitate full rocker panel replacement

5.       Bed, fender and inner rocker must be removed on full part replacement

6.       Does not include the R&I of rear door in “Labor Report”

7.       In the “Rocker Panel” segment of the Labor Overview section in the 2000 Reference Manual (procedure pages), Truck, SUV and Unibody vehicles are combined (example: no listing for the R&I of  bed to facilitate some model rocker replacements)
