Date of Request:
April 22, 2002 1. Database may have not recognized the difference between vehicles equipped with standard and automatic transmissions. 2. Database may have not recognized the difference between vehicles equipped with the towing package option, those equipped with transmission coolers. 3. Database may have not recognized the difference between vehicles equipped with Air Conditioning. 4. No "labor note" for Trans Oil Cooler stating difference between with or without A/C. 5. "Labor Note" for Fan Blade and Fan Clutch may not recognize the removal of "Drive-Belt". 6. Mitchell's graphics for V6 models do not show any fan blade or related parts. 7. Mitchell's graphics for V8 models show an electric fan instead of the conventional fan and fan clutch that the vehicles are equipped with. Models with 4 cyl. are equipped with electric fans. Note from March Taylor: Recently I had the opportunity to observe a certified mechanic change a water pump on a '99 Dakota. The 4x4 Dakota was equipped with a 5.2L V8, automatic transmission, transmission oil cooler and A/C. The trans cooler by itself is not removable; the A/C condenser restricts access to the trans cooler requiring the trans cooler and radiator to be removed as a unit. This confirms that the time allowances shown for both the trans cooler and the fan shroud should be the same time (or greater for trans cooler) as the radiator, 0.9 hours. The technician removed the engine drive belt and the fan/clutch unit. Because the A/C compressor/Alternator mounting bracket impedes access to the water pump and the by-pass hose, the A/C bracket requires removal (crash guide suggests 2.5 hours). The time allowance shown to R&R the water pump (with A/C) is 2.0 hours. The time taken by an experienced technician was 3.8 hours. Suggestion:To all providers: 1. Show time allowance difference on all engine types for vehicles equipped with A/C and/or Oil Cooler tow package option. 2. Show time allowance difference for Trans Cooler, with or without A/C. 3. Include time for the removal of Drive-Belt when replacing fan blade/fan clutch. 4. Distinguish in graphics differences in fan blade type. Results: Original Time Allowances:
Adjusted Time Allowances: Updated 06/04/02
Note: Existing graphics properly display cooling fan types as available from the OEM. Water pump allowance has been reviewed and is accurate per OEM procedures. MOTOR Information Systems
