International, ADP Claims Solutions Group, CCC Information Systems Issue:
1. The Quarter Glass on both models is capsulated. It has been
suggested that the quarter glass for both the sedan and wagon may
not be reusable after removal.
Note: It has been mentioned that any glass part number that ends
with GTY, the Y means it is a "bonded" part, meaning the
capsulated molding around the glass comes manufactured as one whole
unit. It is almost impossible to remove this part once it has been
urethaned on.
What has also not been documented is the function of the bonded
"black-plastic" glass alignment pins during the moment of
impact. What safety role these pins play is still an unanswered
question.
Suggestion:
To all providers:
1. Note that this may be a non-reusable component.

Please
refer all users to the SPECIAL NOTATION on page g27 in the
MOTOR GTE pages regarding stationary glass replacement which
states: "Glass, moldings, mounting studs, or mounting
flange may be damaged or broken during normal service
procedures on some applications. MOTOR advises that these
factors be considered before performing glass operations in
the event unavoidable damage occurs. Time for the removal of
old adhesive, clean and preparation of sealing surfaces
(vehicle and or glass) should be estimated after an on the
spot evaluation. " These pages are also available on the
MOTOR web site. The R&I/R&R time for the glass is
published in the MOTOR CRASH GUIDE TO ESTIMATING and is
also available in the CCC Pathways estimating system.

Note:
The 2000-02 Volkswagon Passat Sedan and Wagon Quarter Glass
service information offers repair procedures for Removal and
Installation of the Quarter glass on the sedan and wagon.
The service information provides the correct cutting depth
of the knife to avoid damaging the sealing lip of the
window. By not adhering to the cutting depth will destroy
the sealing lip and the window must be replaced. The service
information also offers preparation procedures for
reinstallation of the old undamaged window. The alignment
pins are just that according to I-Car's research: The pins
mounted to the glass have no design intent for, nor affect
on how the glass shatters in a collision. The pins are for
alignment purpose during installation. (06/06/02) |
