Inquiry (as stated by inquirer)

While observing a technician overhaul the front bumper on a 00 Ford F-150 it was noted that there were no less then 10 different designs or types of fasteners used to by Ford assemble this bumper. In this situation the original bumper had a significant amount of damage, along with a degree of corrosion from the elements. Most of the fasteners used by Ford to assemble this bumper would be considered dedicated fasteners and not be a commonly stocked item in most shops. In the process of overhauling the bumper the technician spent a considerable amount of additional time dealing with the original fasteners; there were no fasteners supplied with the parts or in the shop inventory. I observed the technician overcome this challenge by repairing and/or substituting the original damaged and corroded fasteners. Because many of the original fasteners were repaired or substituted, the bumper components would not be as secure as they would have been otherwise, having an impact on the integrity of the repair.

When the estimator was asked why fasteners were not supplied along with the other parts, the comment I received was there were no fasteners listed in the data base. Arguably the F-150 is the most popular truck in the country; it is problematic the data base does not list the fasteners needed to assembly this bumper. If fastener information is listed in the data base, the fasteners can be listed on the estimate and ordered at the time the parts are ordered.

Suggestion

            To All:

1.      Please increase the amount of fastener information throughout the data base so fasteners can be listed on the estimated and ordered with the parts.

Response:

Mitchell: January 7, 2003 Necessary bolts, clips, nuts, washers, and retainers have been added to the Front Bumper section of the F-150/250.

MOTOR: January 13, 2003 Added clips, rivets, retainer and fasteners to database.

ADP: January 3, 2003 We will be adding the Front Bumper Clips to the 1997-2002 F-150 trucks. This will be reflected on the Feb. 2003 CD.
